Canterbury Golf Clubs & Courses

Like the rest of New Zealand, Canterbury is blessed with a diverse range of scenery, and of course this provides for some of the most visually stunning golf courses imaginable. And regardless of your skill level, there are golf courses to suit all players and handicaps. (And don't forget that New Zealand is generally acknowledged as having some of the cheapest green fees in the world - many clubs charge no more that between NZ$10 - $20 for 18 holes).

One of New Zealand's oldest clubs is the Christchurch Golf Club which was founded in 1873, and the club where legendary New Zealand golfer Sir Bob Charles started his golfing career. In 1990 Christchurch Golf Club hosted the World Amateur Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy in 1990, and hosted the Lion Foundation New Zealand Women’s Amateur Championship in December 2005. Located close to the Christchurch CBD it is an ideal course for visitors if time is at a premium.

Clearwater Golf Course is a 72-par championship course that is home to the NZ PGA Golf Championship(won by Steve Elker in 2009). As part of the luxurious Clearwater Resort, and only seven minutes drive from Christchurch International airport, this course is a must-see for any golf puritan visiting Canterbury. (The Clearwater golf course website also offers visitors an online tour of their course.)

If you fancy a 6, 500 metre high challenge then consider the Clubhouse at Terrace Downs High Country Resort. Just under an hours drive from Christchurch, this par 72 course will have you gasping for breath at the sheer beauty of your surroundings. Luckily luxurious accommodation and restaurant facilities are close by to help you recuperate! Although the course can be played in around four hours it is recommended you allow longer to soak up the impressive scenery.
